El Sueño

"El Sueño" of course means "The Dream" in Spanish and the dream-like composition and enigmatic imagery of this painting along with the latin subject matter lent itself to the title. Dreams often elude rationale or logic but create a vivid reality that is at the same time believable and otherworldly.

This painting encompasses the forms for which I feel the most aesthetic emotion—usually images of the southwest —buttes, monoliths, spires etc. and of course the female nude which is the archtypical image in the annals of art. The very warm and dry bright orange and yellow coloration typical of the southwest is also color that evokes aesthetic emotion. The broken hourglass signifies time standing still.
